FAQs
Take a read of some common questions we are asked about health and safety.
What are my responsibilities as an employer under UK health and safety law?
Employers are responsible for providing a safe working environment for employees, including conducting risk assessments, implementing safety measures, providing training, and ensuring that workplace policies are followed.
Health and safety law states that organisations must:
- assess risks to employees, customers, partners and any other people who could be affected by their activities;
- arrange for the effective planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of preventive and protective measures;
- have a written health and safety policy if they employ five or more people;
- ensure they have access to competent health and safety advice;
- consult employees about their risks at work and current preventive and protective measures.
We understand that a company can often struggle with compliance. We are here to help.
Do I need a written health and safety policy?
If you have five or more employees, you must have a written health and safety policy that outlines your approach to managing health and safety risks.
Your polices will define how, as an employer, you manage health and safety within your business, stating who does what, when, and how.
What is a risk assessment, and how do I conduct one?
A risk assessment identifies potential hazards in the workplace and evaluates the likelihood of harm occurring.
- What could go wrong and to whom
- What control measures are in place and
- What else could we do to reduce the risk to our employees and others
Employers must conduct regular risk assessments to prevent accidents and ensure employee safety.
What are RAMs? Do I need them?
RAMS are Risk Assessment Method Statements. They are used to ensure that tasks are carried out in a safe and controlled manner.
Risk Assessment (RA): This involves identifying hazards and assessing the risks associated with a particular task, environment, or activity. It involves determining what could go wrong, the likelihood of it happening, and the potential severity of the outcome. The goal is to implement control measures to reduce these risks to an acceptable level.
Method Statement (MS): A document that outlines the specific steps or methods by which a task will be completed, with a focus on how risks identified in the risk assessment will be managed. It provides a step-by-step guide for workers to safely perform tasks and is often used in industries like construction, manufacturing, and engineering.
RAMS are especially important for businesses that perform high-risk activities such as construction, engineering, manufacturing, and general maintenance.
Companies and contractors will find that RAMS are becoming a standard requirement when bidding on larger jobs and projects.
C2 can help you business with RAMS (how? on a per project basis?)
Do I need to provide health and safety training for my employees?
Yes, employers must provide health and safety training to employees. This can include training on specific hazards, emergency procedures, and safe work practices.
We provide in person and online training.
How do I report a workplace accident or injury?
Under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR), employers must report certain accidents, injuries, and dangerous occurrences to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
